Abraham M. Lackman hasn't seen much of his family in Slingerlands lately, so he started Saturday by taking his 10-year-old son out to breakfast at McDonald's.
He followed that up with another breakfast of coffee and donuts with his boss, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Tarky Lombardi Jr., who called his fiscal studies director in for a budget briefing.
The state budget had expired at midnight, and the clock was still ticking. If a new spending plan for the new fiscal year isn't approved shortly, the government will not have the money to pay state workers to keep government programs running.
